The Tarik Skubal trade rumors keep swirling, but one major obstacle continues to stand in the way of any deal: Detroit’s price tag.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Detroit Tigers have listened to offers and discussed what it would take to move their ace, and the bar is extremely high.

Bowden wrote:
“The Tigers have listened to trade offers and at least talked about the ‘ballpark’ parameters it would take to trade him. According to club sources, the asking price is so significant that it is unlikely a trade happens unless Detroit lowers its sights significantly.”
That one sentence explains why Skubal is still in a Tigers uniform.
Detroit isn’t shopping him in a typical sense. They’re setting a superstar-level valuation for a two-time Cy Young winner in his prime and daring another club to meet it. So far, no one has blinked.
And honestly, it makes sense.
Skubal is the type of pitcher organizations build around, not give away. For Detroit to move him, they’re clearly looking for a franchise-altering haul: elite prospects, controllable major leaguers, and long-term building blocks. Anything less would feel like a step backward — especially for a fanbase that’s finally starting to believe in the direction of the rebuild.
Bowden’s report suggests that while teams have checked in, the response has been hesitation, not aggression. The cost is simply too steep right now.
That leaves the Tigers with a few paths forward:
• Hold Skubal and push for contention in 2026
• Revisit trade talks at the deadline, when contenders grow desperate
• Or eventually face the risk of losing leverage if contract talks continue to stall
There’s also the emotional side of it. Trading Skubal for a discounted return would be brutal. Letting him walk later would sting. But dealing him for anything less than a king’s ransom would feel like a failure of asset management.
That’s why Detroit is standing firm.
As Bowden made clear, a trade is only happening if the Tigers drastically change their expectations — and right now, there’s zero indication they plan to do that.
For the moment, the message from the front office is loud and clear:
If you want Tarik Skubal, you’re going to have to pay like you’re getting one of the best pitchers in baseball.

“If you want Tarik Skubal, you’re going to have to pay like you’re getting one of the best pitchers in baseball”….kind of ironic when you (front office) do not want to pay him the 32 millions his asking for 2026…😏
