It would be hard to find a more popular player from the Detroit Red Wings during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s than Darren McCarty. Known for his intense style of play, “don’t back down from anybody” mentality, and uncanny knack of timely goal scoring, McCarty was the ultimate fan favorite.
One of the most memorable moments of his career came on this day back in 2002 during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against hated rival Colorado. McCarty collected his first career playoff hat trick — with all three goals coming in the third period.
It was three of McCarty’s four goals in that series, a series that Detroit went on to win in seven games before hoisting their third Stanley Cup in six seasons at the time.
He might still be smiling after this game!
