The Athletic ranks Detroit Red Wings prospects in bottom half of NHL

Here's where The Athletic ranked the Red Wings.

It’s no secret that the current version of the Detroit Red Wings aren’t at the top of the National Hockey League as most of us have been accustomed to seeing them over the past near three decades.

In fact, their record prior to the COVID-19 shutdown was a ghastly 17-49-5.

And that’s not all of the bad news. Despite owning the NHL’s worst record by a wide margin, they were absolutely shortchanged in this year’s Draft Lottery, landing the 4th pick instead of the 1st.

The Athletic has put out their rankings of where each of the 31 NHL franchises currently stand as far as their prospect pool is concerned; the Red Wings clocked in at No. 18.

Not a terrible position considering the year they just experienced.

Among the top reasons for optimism, according to The Athletic, include top prospects Moritz Seider, whom they drafted 6th overall in 2019. Coupled with young players in Filip Zadina and Filip Hronek, who both got their first real taste of the NHL this past season.

The Wings had a tough year and look to be at the start of a long rebuild. There are some promising draft picks such as Filip Hronek, who has been a top young defenseman in the league. Moritz Seider looks like a true top prospect, but a lot of their high draft picks in the last few years have either not aged well or look to be about par value. They’re going to need some home runs if they are going to take a 17-49-5 team to relevance again. While they have some good young pieces, this looks like a rebuild that is going to take a while.

Do you agree with their assessment?
