Three realistic free-agent defenseman for Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to consider

As the Detroit Red Wings unfortunately suffered through their worst statistical season in several decades during their shortened 2019-20 campaign, it became clear almost immediately that they needed help in just about every area of the ice.

But what perhaps stood out more than anything else was the team defense. An injury to Danny DeKeyser didn’t help things as they collectively gave up 267 goals – the most in the NHL. And they’ll have a few spots to fill, as veterans Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson won’t be returning next season.

And while GM Steve Yzerman may not be looking to make any major moves on the blue line just yet as he’s about to enter his second season on the job, there are a few names available in the free-agent market that he could consider.

1. Justin Schultz, Pittsburgh Penguins

The slick-skating, puck-moving defenseman is coming off a three year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. A two-time Stanley Cup champion, he’s appeared in over 400 NHL games with the Penguins and Edmonton Oilers.

2. Travis Hamonic, Calgary Flames

At 30 years old, Travis Hamonic has appeared in over 600 NHL games with the New York Islanders and Calgary Flames. He’s known for displaying offensive awareness and physical toughness, as well as possessing a booming shot from the point. He was also a 2018 nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy as the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and gives back to his community.

3. Chris Tanev, Vancouver Canucks

Known for his hockey sense and puck-moving ability, Tanev has spent the past several seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. He’s capable of playing over 20 minutes per game, and is also known his willingness to block shots.

Red Wings fans, should Yzerman give any of these players a call when the NHL offseason officially rolls around?
