[tps_title]2) Starting Pitching[/tps_title]
- Justin Verlander
- Jordan Zimmermann
- Anibal Sanchez
- Daniel Norris
- Mike Pelfrey
The Tigers lost a significant player in David Price last year at the trade deadline. However, I think that even with the loss of Price, the Detroit pitching staff will be stronger in 2016.
It’s no secret that pitching is key to winning championships in baseball and Detroit needs an ace to lead the staff. Justin Verlander is primed to regain that role for Detroit. After returning from injury last year JV performed very well. His 3.38 ERA in 2015 was a solid bounce back from the 4.54 ERA in 2014, and he was pitching with confidence. Look for Verlander to harken back to his younger days and step up as the ace of the Detroit staff. Furthermore, his experience and veteran leadership will be a calming influence in the locker room throughout the season.
Two time All-Star Jordan Zimmermann is a huge upgrade for the Tigers. Zimmermann co-led the National League in wins in 2013 and pitched a no-hitter in 2014. Furthermore, his contract is heavily incentivized for personal accomplishments. He is motivated to produce and it will be great to see him in the Old English D this season.
Look for Anibal Sanchez and Daniel Norris to come back strong from nagging injuries and fill out the middle of the staff. Even if Norris is sidelined longer than expected with injuries, Shane Greene has had a tremendous spring training. Mike Pelfrey is a solid veteran to round out the staff. With the amount of run support the pitchers will receive this year, the Tigers should have a capable starting staff that is led by two superstars in Verlander and Zimmermann.
