Heading into the 2020 season, Miguel Cabrera knew he would be the Detroit Tigers designated hitter, which of course meant he would not be playing in the field like had been used to doing throughout his Major League Baseball career.
But what does Miggy think about hitting and then sitting on the bench until his next at-bat?
In his first interview in six months, Cabrera answered that question and he made it clear that he wants to play first base and he hopes that happens in 2021.
“It means a lot to play first base,” Cabrera said this weekend in Kansas City, where the Tigers are likely playing their final games of 2020. “I hope they can give me more time next year to play first. I’d like to be in the field. I’m learning how to be the DH right now. It’s a little hard for me to hit and then go and sit and think about what I’m going to do in the next at-bat. In the past, I’d forget about hitting and I’d go out and play defense. .. Right now I’m learning how to be the DH, but at the same I want to spend a little more time at first base next year and hopefully I can do that.”
Cabrera also talked about the difficulties of playing this season with COVID-19 changing so many things, including not having fans in the stands.
“It’s really difficult because we go to home, stadium, hotel, home, stadium, and we’re not able to do anything,” he said. “But at the same we’ve got to stay attentive, because we’re able to do this right now in the middle of this pandemic. I say ‘thank God’ every day because he gives me the opportunity to play baseball. Hopefully we can do the same next year but with fans in the stands. Hopefully next year can be totally different.”
Nation, do you think Cabera should be allowed to play some first base in 2021 or would you prefer he sticks to being the Tigers designated hitter?
