Chamberlain was designated for assignment one week ago, along with left-handed reliever Tom Gorzelanny. This meant that the Tigers had ten days to release, trade, or place him on waivers. Because no team showed any interest in Joba’s services, they decided to formally release him on Friday.
The 29-year old Chamberlain was 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP in 30 appearances for the Tigers this season. He pitched well during the first half of the 2014 campaign, but struggled towards the end, finishing the season with a 3.57 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.
Joba in nine seasons with the Tigers and New York Yankees has a career 3.82 ERA as a reliever and a short stint as a starter during his time in New York.
