Tigers GM Al Avila provides ‘unusual’ update on Eduardo Rodriguez

The Detroit Tigers placed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on their restricted list last month, saying that he was dealing with a “personal matter” and wouldn’t be rejoining the team any time soon.

The statement read:

“Eduardo Rodríguez has informed the Club that due to personal matters he will not rejoin the team at this time. As a result, Eduardo has been placed on the restricted list until further notice.”

Prior to today’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park, Tigers general manager Al Avila provided an update on Rodriguez’s status, and it’s not what fans will have been hoping to hear. According to Avila, the team has reached out to Rodriguez, but has not heard anything back.

“We reached out, but he hasn’t reached out back,” Avila said. “We’re just kind of waiting it out…It is unusual. But we have no choice but to wait and see what develops as we move forward.”

So, have the Tigers considered voiding his deal?

“I’m not gonna get into that at this point,” Avila said. “Obviously that’s a situation, it’s a private situation right now on his part. I won’t get into that.”

Eduardo Rodriguez remains on Detroit’s restricted list

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch echoed Avila’s sentiments, saying that they simply don’t know what direction the situation is headed in.

“From what I know, there’s been no movement whatsoever and no communication,” Hinch said. “It’s been pretty quiet, and we’ve respected his privacy and just tried to wait for his camp to give us some direction on what’s ahead. So we don’t know.”

“Obviously we want him to be OK,” Hinch continued. “We want him to be in a good place. We want everything to settle around him. But we can’t really make any considerations until we know exactly what’s at hand. We’ll wait for him to open up when he wants.”
