WP: Max Scherzer (1-0) LP: Bartolo Colon (0-1) SV: Joaquin Benoit (1)
OAKLAND, California —
The Detroit Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, and that’s all the offense they would need as they hold on to win Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Oakland A’s, 3-2.
Max Scherzer silenced the Oakland offense for most of the night, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 11 A’s. His only blemish was a 7th inning 2-run home run by Yoenis Cespedes which woke up the crowd of over 48,000. Drew Smyly took over in the 8th and struck out both batters he faced before handing the ball over to Joaquin Benoit who completed the 4-out save.
Austin Jackson started the game off with a leadoff double, and Torii Hunter was hit by a pitch to put men on 1st & 2nd for Miguel Cabrera, who lined one into center field, scoring Jackson. Torii was able to make it to 3rd on the play. Prince Fielder then grounded into a double play, but thankfully Hunter was able to score from 3rd. With 2 outs, Alex Avila was able to score Victor Martinez by shooting a deep single towards the 2nd baseman.
Overall, it was a good win for Detroit. It’s always good when you steal one from your opponent on the road to start a series. However, they have much to improve on. Save for the 1st inning, the offense didn’t do much of anything. They’re going to need to get those bats going to get some run support for the starting pitcher.
Game 2 is tomorrow (Saturday night) at 9:07 and can be seen on TBS. Good start for the Tigers, let’s keep it going!!
