Tigers invite 22 players to major league spring training

The Detroit Tigers have announced their list of Spring Training invitees for 2017.

The 22 invitees are comprised of ten pitchers, five outfielders, four infielders and three catchers. All of them will be looking to capture lightning in a bottle for a month and crack the 40-man roster, or even the 25-man.

There’s a number of notable names on the list who will be giving it a go with the team down in Lakeland. Among those are journeyman pitchers who had a cup of coffee with the Tigers last year, Logan Kensing and Dustin Molleken. There’s also the recently-signed, Toledo-born and Michigan State alum A.J. Achter and 10-year relief veteran Edward Mujica, also recently inked to a minor league deal.

There’s also the up-and-coming, hard-throwing reliever Joe Jimenez, who will surely make a lot of noise in spring training after a spectacular 2016 campaign.

Among the everyday position players, veterans like Omar Infante and Brendan Ryan will look to crack the big league roster, as well as Alex Presley after re-upping with the team. And a couple high-rising minor leaguers in the same boat as Jimenez are catcher Grayson Greiner and outfielder Mike Gerber.

Tigers pitchers and catchers report for their first workout in Lakeland, FL on February 14, while the first full squad activity will begin February 18.
