Game Notes:
After recording one of the worst starts of his career, last Saturday against the Indians, Justin Verlander was looking to get back on the horse. Unfortunately, that was not going to be the case tonight. All night JV never looked comfortable, his pitch count elevated (again), and by the time the sixth inning roled around he was pressing 100 pitches. Ultimately, Verlander gave up 4 earned runs in five-plus innings of work (he pitched to four batters in the sixth, recording zero outs), struck out four, and walked six — only the second time in his career he ever walked that many.
James McCann brought the boomstick with him to Minnesota, taking a Hector Santiago pitch deep into the left-field seats for a solo shot in the sixth inning. The tater is McCann’s fourth on the season and comes after a pretty hefty dry spell at the plate.
The Tigers could not overcome a 6-run sixth inning and wound up losing their fourth game in a row.
Looking Ahead:
Tomorrow the Tigers trot out Matt Boyd to face Adalberto Mejia. They will most likely be without Miguel Cabrera, who injured his groin and left the game early tonight. What that means for the lineup, especially when Miggy was starting to heat up, is yet to be seen. An unfortunate situation they find themselves in.
