Tigers minor league pitcher suspended 50 games following failed drug test

On Monday, West Michigan Whitecaps starting pitcher Spenser Watkins was suspended 50 games following a positive drug test. The failed test was the second for Watkins, hence the 50 game suspension.

The Detroit Tigers released the following statement regarding the suspension:

“The Detroit Tigers recognize the suspension of Spenser Watkins for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game, and the ballclub continues to fully support this policy. The Tigers’ organization will have no further comment on Watkins’ suspension.”

Watkins, who was drafted by the Tigers in the 30th round of the 2014 draft, was off to a good start this season. He had a 1-0 record with an ERA of 1.69 in two starts with the Whitecaps.
