Tigers News and Notes: Day 5 in Lakeland

Sharing is caring!

Day 5 of Spring Training included the long-awaited arrival of Miguel Cabrera, talk of who would bat second in the batting order, and much more. As of today, every Tiger has reported to Spring Training except for the injured Victor Martinez.

Cabrera Reports

With Cabrera reporting, all of the Tigers expected to report have reported. Despite being limited on what he could do after off-season surgery, all reports are that Cabrera looks better than many expected.

Although he has reported and started light workouts with the team, Cabrera is still uncertain if he’ll be ready for opening day.

Who Slots Second in the Batting Order?

On Day 5, one of the biggest talking points was who would be slotted into the second spot in the batting order now that Torii Hunter has moved onto the Minnesota Twins.

Along with Alex Avila, Jose Iglesias and newly acquired Anthony Gose are also options for the number two spot in the lineup. Yoenis Cespedes, J.D Martinez and Nick Castellanos aren’t real options at this point, according to Ausmus.

Bullpen Update

The focus today in terms of bullpen arms was on Joel Hanrahan and Bruce Rondon. Hanrahan didn’t throw today, as his throwing is being put on hold after a uncomfortable throwing session yesterday.

On the other hand, Rondon looked good in his throwing session today, and is coming along nicely with no setbacks at this point.

Despite injuries still surrounding the bullpen, Ausmus is encouraged with what he’s seen so far in Spring Training.

Contract Updates

Tigers are exactly one week away from their first Spring Training game as Detroit kicks off their Spring season on Monday, March 2 against Florida Southern College.
