Tigers offseason bidding war: Price or Cespedes?

Since debuting with the Tampa Bay Rays full time in 2009, David Price has shown he is an absolute workhorse on the mound, and that he is on the highest tier of big league pitchers in baseball. The four-time All-Star and 2012 Cy Young winner has proven he can take over a game and be relied on when a team needs him most. He was on the bump for Detroit in the final game of the season in 2014 against the Minnesota Twins and helped the team clinch their fourth consecutive division title.

In his six full seasons in the big leagues (2009-2014), he has eclipsed 200 strikeouts in a season three times, including leading the American League last season with an alarming 271 K’s. He ranks third among active starting pitchers under the age of 30 in complete games with 12, behind only Felix Hernandez (24) and Clayton Kershaw (17). Those same two guys also got nice big contracts recently. In February of 2013, Hernandez signed a 7-year, $175 million contract with Seattle. Almost a year later, Kershaw inked a 7-year, $215 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing him to make $30 million a season.

Detroit Tigers MLB Draft Preview

The Tigers have a chance to lock up Price for good, make him the ultimate ace of the future. A lot of speculation has been made that Dave Dombrowski will offer similar money to Price what he offered to Max Scherzer a season ago, which was 6-year, roughly $144 million. Max ended up getting 7-years, $215 million from the Nationals. Two things here. Max is not on the level of David Price, King Felix, or Clayton Kershaw. And David Price will be rightfully asking for that kind of money. Is the price right for….well, Price?
