Prior to today’s 4th of July game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Detroit Tigers have placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 15-day DL with a left calf strain. Cabrera injured himself trying to steal on what looked like a hit and run play with Victor Martinez at the plate.

In a corresponding move, the Tigers have purchased the contract of INF Jefry Marte from Triple A Toledo.

Toledo Mud Hens infielder Jefry Marte is one of three Hens players to make the All-Star team for the International League (AAA). In 77 games played this season, Marte has a slash line of .271/.337/.497 with 13 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
Due to the injury to Miguel Cabrera, Tigers catcher Alex Avila, who just returned from the disabled list last night, will be playing first base in today’s game and probably the bulk of games that Cabrera is out, so James McCann will be getting more playing time once again, as he is back behind the plate for game two of this weekend series against the Jays.
UPDATE: The MRI that Cabrera received revealed much worse news than initially expected. The MRI revealed a grade 3 calf strain. Cabrera will miss up to 6 weeks.
