Tigers recall Bruce Rondon, Kyle Ryan; option Matt Boyd and Blain Hardy

Prior to the series finale against the Royals, the Tigers made a flurry of roster moves regarding their pitching staff.

Following the 16-5 loss on Saturday, Detroit optioned two pitchers to Triple-A and brought up two more Sunday.

Starter Matt Boyd could not get out of the 4th inning on Saturday, going 3.1 IP and allowing 7 ER on 8 H, striking out just one Royal hitter. In his last two starts now, Boyd has yielded 13 ER on 15 H in just 8 IP.

Blaine Hardy came into Saturday’s game and faced one batter, giving up a double that later came around the score in the inning. In Friday’s 10-3 loss to the Royals, Hardy allowed 5 ER in just one inning of work, seeing his ERA balloon from 1.59 to 5.11. His ERA now currently sits and INF, or incomplete because he did not record an out.

Kyle Ryan will be making his second stint of the season with the Tigers. He logged 20.1 IP earlier in the year and registered a 3.10 ERA. Down in Toledo, he has not allowed a run in his last eight relief appearances (7 IP, 3 H, 6 BB, 5 K).

This will be the first time Tigers fans see Bruce Rondon in 2016. In 22 games (21.2 IP) with the Mud Hens this year, Rondon has posted an ERA of 3.74, including an ERA of 2.00 over his last 9 IP. He does have nine saves on the year, but a rather high WHIP of 1.80.

The host of roster moves do suggest a couple different routes the Tigers will go regarding Boyd’s spot in the rotation.
