Tigers recalling Blaine Hardy, promoting prospect JaCoby Jones; optioning Boyd, McGehee

Rosters around Major League Baseball are set to expand later this week, giving teams even more options come September to further their chances of making the postseason. However, before doing so, the Tigers have made a few notable roster changes, including one surrounding one of their top-tier prospects.

Tigers prospect JaCoby Jones has played in 99 games between Triple-A Toledo (79 GMs) and Double-A Erie (20) and hit a combined .257/.327/.407. He’s only hitting .243 with the Mud Hens this year but is hitting .289 over his last ten games.

Jones defensively has seen significant time this year playing at third base and center field, so he provides some versatility for the Tigers.

Southpaw Blaine Hardy has spent the bulk of 2016 down on the farm, a 1.72 ERA in 32 games (31.1 IP) for the Mud Hens. And he’s been dominant as of late as well, allowing just one ER over his last 13 innings of work. He’s struggled in his time with Detroit though this year, posting an ERA approaching 5.00 over 16.1 innings logged.

Lefty Matt Boyd started on Monday against the White Sox and despite allowing just two ER, he only pitched four innings. The decision to bring Hardy up is merely to provide reinforcements in the bullpen. Boyd has been terrific though going back to the beginning of July, posting a 2.61 ERA over those nine starts and the team has gone 8-1 in starts made by Matt.

Miguel Cabrera: 'No way am I going to quit'

Veteran Casey McGehee has come up and provided a very admirable and effective fill-in for the injured Nick Castellanos at third base. While he doesn’t post nearly the offensive production as Nick (.235/.271/.247 in August) but has been superb defensively

Both Boyd and McGehee are almost surely to re-join the club when rosters officially expand, and both Jones and Hardy will likely stay. The decision to recall Jones is one that also coincides with an injury-plagued Cameron Maybin who departed Monday’s contest for precautionary reasons with that thumb. Detroit is hoping Jones can provide adequate enough defense at either position while adding more pop than did McGehee.

Alex Presley was designated for assignment over the weekend when Detroit reinstated shortstop Jose Iglesias from the disabled list. He too is another candidate to join the big league club for September.
