The Detroit Tigers have added veteran depth to their infield, signing 32-year-old Kevin Newman to a minor league contract, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. Newman, an eight-year MLB veteran, was released by the Los Angeles Angels on August 2.
He’s expected to get an immediate look in the organization, as Newman is starting at shortstop for Triple-A Toledo tonight.

Newman brings plenty of big-league experience, with 672 career games played across stints with the Pirates, Reds, Diamondbacks, and Angels. Over his career, he has compiled 562 hits, 28 home runs, 210 RBIs, and 47 stolen bases, while posting a .259 batting average.
His best season came in 2019 with Pittsburgh, when he hit .308 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs, establishing himself as a capable everyday player. More recently, Newman split time as a utility infielder, with his versatility allowing him to play shortstop, second base, and third base.
For the Tigers, this move adds organizational depth while giving Toledo a steady veteran presence. If he finds success in Triple-A, Newman could earn another chance at the big-league level before the end of the season.
