Tigers Looking For Bullpen Help As Deadline Approaches

According to JP Morosi and FoxSports.com, the Detroit Tigers are having trade discussions with the Texas Rangers regarding relief pitcher Joakim Soria. FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Tigers are not targeting a pitcher who is a pure closer, because Joe Nathan is their closer for the foreseeable future. This would mean rumors that Detroit is interested in Padres closer Huston Street are false. Soria is 1-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 16 saves for the Rangers this year.

Another name tied to Detroit trade rumors is former Tiger Joaquin Benoit. Benoit’s contract is the only issue, making Soria a more logical trade target. Soria is under contract for $5.5M this season with a club option next year, while Benoit is making $6M this year and under contract for $8M next year.

The MLB Trade Deadline is July 31st, so Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has a little under 2 weeks to find some much needed bullpen help for his team.
