A once-promising Detroit Tigers prospect is getting a fresh start in the American League East.
The Tigers have traded designated hitter and corner outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations, the club confirmed Tuesday (Jan. 6). The move ends Malloy’s tenure in Detroit less than two weeks after he was designated for assignment on Dec. 21, a procedural step that removed him from the 40-man roster.

Malloy, who turns 26 next month, was approaching the end of the waiver process when Tampa Bay stepped in to acquire him before he hit the open market. The Rays now assume his contract and will have the opportunity to see whether a change of scenery unlocks some of the offensive upside scouts once projected.
Originally acquired from the Atlanta Braves as part of a 2022 trade, Malloy broke into the majors in 2024 and exceeded rookie limits that season. He spent 2025 shuttling between Detroit and Triple-A while struggling to gain consistency at the plate, finishing the year with a .221 average, one home run, and 17 RBI across 104 at-bats.
With Detroit continuing to reshape its roster ahead of spring training, Malloy became the odd man out — but Tampa Bay’s player-development track record makes the landing spot an intriguing one to watch.
Whether he carves out a role in the Rays’ lineup remains to be seen, but Malloy now gets another shot to prove he belongs at the big-league level.
