A reunion with former Tigers slugger Yoenis Cespedes may have been closer to happening than we ever knew.
MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman tweeted the following this afternoon:
When signed Upton, Det was also talking to cespedes. Liked JU slightly more . Bid 4 yrs for YC, might well have gone 5.

Although the four year deal was on the table, it is believed the term may have gone up to five years if the deal for Justin Upton hadn’t come together.
The team decided to go forward with the deal for Upton because of his consistency and demeanor, also according to Heyman:
Tigers preferred Upton to cespedes, tho YC has even more thump. Loved J-Up consistency/personality. Trammell/gibson touted.

Upton received a six-year deal worth $132.75 million with the Tigers, while Cespedes signed a three-year pact with the New York Mets worth a cool $75 million.
