With two sentences Friday night, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may have demonstrated why some people consider him the best quarterback of all time.
Brady’s team handed the Detroit Lions a 30-28 loss in their third preseason game, but when “Tom Terrific” was in the game, it was not nearly that close. Brady went 12-15 for 174 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. When he left the game, Detroit trailed 24-0, with 21 of those points coming in the first nine minutes of the game.
So Brady was probably pleased with his performance, and how his team dominated the Lions, right? Think again. In an MLive article that also includes post-game quotes from Matthew Stafford, Jim Caldwell, Bill Belichick, and Ameer Abdullah, here are those two sentences from Brady I eluded to:
We had a kind of few plays that really sucked, and then we had the interception which had sucked too.
So if you take those away, it’d be a pretty good night.
Nothing about Brady’s performance “sucked.” Had Stafford had a day like that, even in a preseason game, the echoes of the “M-V-P” chants would still be rattling around inside Ford Field.
The strive for perfection, although he knows he will never achieve it. The understanding that good enough is never good enough. A man that focuses on results, not excuses.
That is Tom Brady. And that is why some people consider him the best quarterback of all time. It is also why the New England Patriots currently own the best odds to win Super Bowl 52.
