In a year of firsts, the Michigan State Spartans suffered a first that they’ll be looking to forget as soon as possible.
The Iowa Hawkeyes handed Michigan State and head coach Tom Izzo the worst home loss in his career, an 88-58 setback at Breslin Center thanks to key 3-pt shooting on the part of Iowa.
It was also Michigan State’s 3rd loss in Big Ten play by over 20 points this season, and the worst home loss for Izzo since 1997 against Minnesota.
The Spartans only hit six of 21 3-pt attempts while shooting a mere 35.5% from the field, while being bested in rebounds by a 46-37 margin.
Meanwhile, Rocket Watts didn’t play after halftime for what the team described as “health and safety precautions”.
For the Spartans who haven’t missed the NCAA Tournament since 1997, things aren’t exactly looking promising.
