Top 10 unexpected heroes in Super Bowl history

3. Timmy Smith, Halfback, Washington Redskins: Super Bowl XXII

Timmy Smith was drafted in the 5th round out of Texas Tech in the 1987 NFL Draft and wasn’t given much of an opportunity during the regular season with 126 total rushing yards.

Looking to spark their rushing attack, the Washington Redskins decided to start the rookie halfback against the Denver Broncos on Super Bowl Sunday.

Smith would go on to rush for a record-breaking 204 yards, which still stands today, and two touchdowns in the 42-10 triumph for the Redskins.
