Texas is another example of a school having immense potential but ultimately falling upon itself. However, two reasons the ‘Horns are put ahead of the Trojans on this list: Texas has beaten Southern Cal. in the biggest game of the century thus far, and Texas’ future seems a little brighter than the Trojans.

Texas’ fall from grace is tied directly with the fall of their longtime coach Mack Brown. Brown’s hubris saw his eventual demise in Austin after posting seven top ten finishes and reaching the national title game twice. Brown had a lot of success in Texas in the 2000s, bringing the Longhorns to nine straight double-digit win seasons.

Eventually, however, his run at Texas came to an unfortunate halt as Brown refused to admit he had lost his former magic over the program and hadn’t won ten games in a season since 2009.

Eventually, Brown was forced out, and it gave a real damper on a terrific run for Texas football. The future was handed off to former Louisville Cardinals HC Charlie Strong. Despite two 5-7 seasons, Strong has been repairing the broken ego of the Longhorns faithful and seems to be putting the program back on course.

Hopefully, that occurs sooner (no pun intended), rather than later.
