[tps_title]8. Auburn Tigers[/tps_title]
Auburn has the unique circumstance of being in the “underdog” category as compared to the other programs in the top ten of this list.
War Eagle has the unfortunate situation of facing the powerhouse dynasty of Alabama every single year. However, despite having lost six of the last eight Iron Bowl games vs. their rival, they are 9-7 against the Tide since 2000. Wins in 2010 and 2013 bolstered the Tigers to National Title appearances and had memorable moments including a historic, Heisman-defining performance from Cam Newton to the ‘Kick Six’ heard round the world (or at least the nation).
Being able to not be demolished by arguably the best program in college football history year in and year out is impressive. What is even more impressive is that the Tigers have had three conference championships with three different coaches. The absolute travesty that is the BCS struck Auburn fans the hardest with their 2004 campaign, when they were snuffed out of the championship game despite beating five top 15 opponents and going undefeated.
Sporadic play is what slots the Tigers at No. 6 on the list. Despite the aforementioned 2004, ’10, and ’13 campaigns, Auburn has had 11 seasons with four or more losses, two of which they finished under the .500 mark.
It would seem the Tigers are a real hit or miss program.
