The Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks were tied at three wins each in the 2009 Western Conference Semi-Finals, setting up Detroit’s first Game 7 since 1996. Tallies from Jiri Hudler, Darren Helm, and Mikael Samuelsson had Detroit leading 3-1 in the second period, but Anaheim would battle back to tie the game in the third.
The game appeared destined for overtime before Henrik Zetterberg threw a backhand pass to the front of the net, giving Dan Cleary the chance to play hero with just three minutes remaining. The Joe Louis Arena crowd erupted, and Detroit held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory to advance to the Western Conference Finals.
