Whether you bleed maize and blue, or the Spartan green and white, I think we all can admit that Tom Izzo is one of the best, if not the best in Michigan college sports history. Izzo has brought seven big ten regular season championships, as well as three big ten tourney titles. Not to mention the 16 year run of appearing in the NCAA Tournament, plus a national title doesn’t hurt either.
Why am I bringing this up? Well the sporting news has released their list of the top 25 current active coaches across all sports, and two of our very own Michigan coaches received places on the list. Izzo got the nod at number eleven overall, whose success they compared to Bo Schembechler in the 70’s as Michigan head football coach.
Also appearing on the list was our very own Mike Babcock who came in at number thirteen. Babcock led the Wings to a Stanley Cup in 2008, and also led team Canada to two Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014. Also mentioned for Babcock was the fact he has more wins with the Wings than Jack Adams, but has yet to win the award.
So here’s my question for all of you…
Who would you say are the top coaches that the state of Michigan has ever been graced with? Scotty Bowman and his 3 Stanley Cups? Bo Schembechler and the innumerable conference titles he brought to Ann Arbor? Chuck Daly with the two NBA titles during the Bad Boys era? Or is it Izzo, with his national title and 16 year NCAA tourney appearance run? Or Maybe Sparky Anderson who brought us our last World Series in 1984?
What do the great fans of this state have to say?
And please don’t forget to help us support a great cause for an amazing little girl who needs our help. Every dollar counts, please help us raise some money for Angels for Kayla

Bo knows football in mich
every UM fan in the world is crying for Bo right now
Bo of course.. This is a horrible question!
Chuck Daly
Hard to argue against Scotty Bowman as the greatest. Followed by Sparky, Daddy Rich, Bo and Izzo.
BO!!!!
Bo
Wayne fonts!! Lol sparky gets my vote
Mr.Izzo for sure because he’s from the U.P.
Coach Walt Owens, Denby High School.
Chuck Daly hands down, The Lions played hard for Wayne Fontes. Sparky and Leland also have to be on the list.
You must be a Spartan fan.
Sparky Anderson. But no love for Steve Fisher? Guy has just as many NCAA titles as Izzo and more NCAA Finals appearances.
Keep dreaming
Bo Schembekler.
toss up between bo and scotty Bowman
Scotty Bowman- Hard to argue with the best coach in sports building the Wings into a 24 year playoff run that is still going
What about my man Larry Brown?
Bo, Scotty why the hell are they not on there?
Scotty bowman or tom Izoo then bo schembechler
Just to clarify, I’m not saying that you can just pick from the ones I said. If you have someone you prefer over them, by all means post them in the comments, I was just listing a few of them and their accomplishments.
Your article says Tom Izzo has 2 national titles?
The guy who was was coaching while Michigan was cheating in basketball? Yeah, good idea.
No Scotty Bowman or Chuck Daly?
Sparky too!
Bo….. DUH….
Scotty Bowman!!!!!!
Izzy if I have to choose between Babs !!
lloyd carr
You are right. Cheating in basketball compared to Izzo who allowed two rapists back on the team. My bad!!!!!
They are padding Izzo’s stats to make him look better.
Scotty Bowman
Izzo is/has been a great coach. He deserves to be on this list. Starting today, however, I would prefer John Beilein to be my school’s coach. I am thankful that he is. Go Blue!
Bowman, Sparky or Chuck Daly and Bo have to be considered for number 1
Wayne Fontes is another
Bo Schembechler! He demanded excellence off the field and if someone didn’t like it they’d be sent packing.
Wow, I didn’t see anyone say Chuck Daly…….. The Pistons have no fans left…..
Scotty Bowman, Sparky Anderson..and the 0-16 Detroit Lions coach!! (Only for getting the Perfect Season in reverse-Jim Rome)…
Hard to say it’s Bo as much as I wanna, cause he’s one of the few that didn’t win a Championship
George Wilson,,,, he did the impossible,,,,, won the championship with the Detroit Lions
but for real,,, Mr. Scotty Bowman, no question
Chucky D !
Sparky Anderson.
Sid Abel
Clearly Scotty Bowman. Took a cursed franchise to 3 championships to Izzo’s one. (Big Ten Tittle is like winning the first round of the nhl playoffs.)
I think they are looking for someone from this century
Sparky Anderson
Or me from my living Room? Lol
Scotty Bowman hands down.
“current active”
Izzo
Sparky Anderson and Bo
that makes sense then.
Bo, Sparky and Scotty in that order
Bo
1) Scotty Bowman 2) Sparky Anderson 3) Chuck Daly 4)Bo Schembechler 5) Tom Izzo
Scotty bowman or BO
Bowman!
Biggie Munn. 54 wins, 9 losses in seven years at MSU. 1952 national championship in an undefeated season.
Fielding Yost best coach ever in this state. 10 big ten titles 6 national championships had a stretch at one point 55-1 out scoring his opponents 2,821 to 42.
Frank Anzalone LSSU hockey coach.
John MacInnes
Wayne Fontes
Yost by far, look at resume! Alma college Bob Devaney who coached at Nebraska!
People are missing the point- must be still active in coaching, therefore IZZO!!!
Wayne Fontes, only coach to get the Lions a playoff win in the last 3 decades.
5) Hughie Jennings 4) Jack Adams 3) Sparky Anderson 2) Scotty Bowman 1) Fielding Yost
Scotty Bowman
Bowman, Daly and Anderson.
