Tigers look to keep Mo’ going in Motown.

Detroit is coming off a road series win in New York. Today Spencer Turnbull (0-1 5.40 ERA) looks to follow the last two strong starts by Jordan Zimmerman and Matthew Boyd with his first win of 2019. So far in this young season, the starting pitching has led the way for the Tigers. Coming into today, Detroit pitching is fifth in MLB with a 2.33 ERA and second in WHIP at 0.89. Not to be outdone by the starters, closer Shane Greene is four out of four in saves and has allowed only one hit in his four appearances.

Jacob Junis gets the start for Kansas City (1-0 4.76 ERA), he got the win in his previous outing over the White Sox. He has had success against Detroit as he is 6-1 lifetime vs. Tiger hitters.

Detroit bats have not gotten very warm yet, but the contributions are coming along as Gordon Beckham hit his first home run as a Tiger to seal the series winner in New York. Detroit has just 12 runs in 7 games but is still 4-3, they need to heat up as they cannot continue this pace of scoring or hitting (just .169 as a team) and hope to stay in the area of .500 baseball.

Kansas City, however, has scored 26 runs in 5 games, good for 10th best in the majors. Adalberto Mondesi comes in as their hottest hitter at .409, and C Martin Maldonado is at .316. The pitching hasn’t supported this so it could be a good time for Detroit to host the Royals.

It’s opening day in Detroit, a tradition that goes back over 100 years in the city and the Tigers look to come out on top in the 2019 version.
