On Friday night, Michigan State got much more than they bargained for from the University of Detroit as the Spartans had to use a late run to walk away with an 83-76 win in East Lansing.
Following the game, Spartans’ head coach Tom Izzo spoke to reporters and he made a comment that caught the attention of Detroit forward, Matt Johnson.
“In fairness to our (power forwards), when you take a guy who’s on the wing and he averages 1 point at St. Bonaventure and he goes off for 20, that’s not anyone’s fault. That’s the virus’ fault.”
Johnson, who was the Titans second leading scorer on Friday with 20 points, caught wind of Izzo’s comment and fired back.
“tom izzo i was held back, don’t let them numbers at St. Bonaventure fool you, i can hoop as you can see!!”

To be fair, I am fairly certain that Izzo meant nothing negative towards Johnson, but Johnson sure thought there was some shade thrown his way.
