Detroit Mercy wins Horizon League Tourney opener

Detroit Mercy advanced to the second round of the Horizon League Tournament as they defeated the Youngstown State 77-67 Tuesday night at Calihan Hall.

The fifth-seeded Titans were led by sophomore guard Chris Jenkins who scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. chipped in 20 points as the Titans rallied from a 37-31 halftime deficit to run away with the victory over the eighth-seeded Penguins.

Detroit will now face the fourth-seeded Cleveland State Vikings in the second round with the winner drawing top seeded Valparaiso in the semifinals. UDM and Cleveland State split the regular season series, setting up the impending rubber match on Friday at 9:30 p.m. (ESPN3).
