Following 15 seasons with the New York Rangers, All-Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist joined the Washington Capitals on a one-year contract. However, he won’t be suiting up this season – or potentially ever again.
Lundqvist announced earlier in the month that he’d be forced to miss the entire 2020-21 NHL Season due to a heart condition. Earlier today, he announced on Twitter that he will undergo an “aortic valve replacement, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement.”
Lundqvist is a five-time nominee for the Vezina Trophy (won in 2012), awarded to the NHL’s top goaltender. With 459 career wins, he’s 7th on the all-time list for victories by a goaltender.
