The Detroit Tigers dropped today’s contest against the New York Mets on a final strike from Mets closer Edwin Diaz that drew the ire of batter JaCoby Jones and manager Ron Gardenhire, who felt umpire Jerry Meals made the wrong call.
With runners on second and third base and trailing by a run, Diaz delivered a pitch that Jones thought was outside the plate.
“Everybody in here said it was really close,” Gardenhire said .
Following the pitch, Jones immediately dropped his bat and started towards first base thinking he’d earned a walk, but immediately turned back to voice his disagreement with Meals.
“It was off the plate,” he said.
