The Detroit Red Wings got a huge boost from Justin Abdelkader (injury) and Brendan Smith (healthy scratch) returning to the lineup on Tuesday night, as the series went to Joe Louis Arena for Game 3.
Abdelkader’s return made the lines better from top to bottom, and also made the match ups against the Tampa Bay Lightning’s lines a lot stronger. Pavel Datsyuk would open the scoring in the first period when a Tomas Tatar shot went off his skate while he was driving the net.
No goals were scored again until the third period, when Riley Sheahan potted one on the power play from a nice passing play by both Abdelkader and Henrik Zetterberg. Luke Glendening would score into the empty net to seal the 3-0 victory.
Overall, it was a much better game by the Red Wings. Their penalty kill was outstanding, as they killed all six of the Lightning’s power play attempts, including a 5-on-3, and Petr Mrazek was excellent when called upon, stopping all 22 shots for the shutout.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday (April 23rd) at 7pm ET at the Joe for Game 4.
