Washington Football Team’s president pretty much guarantees team name for 2021

As you know, prior to the start of the 2020 season, Washington’s NFL franchise made the decision to scrap the awful nickname they once had in favor of something new.

That ‘something new’ was supposedly going to come before the start of the season but instead, the franchise decided they could be called the Washington Football Team for the 2020 campaign and that they would reveal their new team nickname during the offseason, before the 2021 season.

Well, for those of you who have been patiently waiting to find out Washington’s new nickname, you are likely going to be waiting for another season.

On Tuesday, team president Jason Wright told Washington TV station WJLA that the Washington Football Team could remain the same when next season rolls around.

“There’s a pretty good chance we will be the Washington Football Team next season,” Wright said.

“Everybody needs to take a deep breath. It’s not coming tomorrow. It’s a business decision, we need to understand that market. More importantly, it’s important to engage the community and the fans. We’re also in the process of identifying the folks that should weigh in over time. We want this name and brand to represent the entire area, to represent the fan base, but to also attract new folks to this fan base. We want to grow this fan base as part of our new identity.

I think next year is fast because of how the brand has to come together through uniforms, through approval processes through the league,” Wright said Tuesday.

“We could get there quicker, it’s actually pretty hard to get there that quickly because of all the steps that need to happen.”

Sorry, folks, but it sounds like we will not know what Washington’s new nickname will be until after the 2021 season.
