WATCH: Alex Avila blasts first home run in Cubs uniform

When general manager Al Avila announced he was bringing his son back to the Detroit Tigers prior to the start of the season, not many had an opinion one way or the other. After all, Alex Avila was simply being brought back to Motown to back up the starting catcher, James McCann.

But as the season went along, Avila got hot and as the MLB trade deadline approached, his name started to get tossed around as a potential trade target for some contending teams.

As we now know, Alex was traded to the Chicago Cubs as part of a deal that also included Tigers closer (or should I say, “former” Tigers closer), Justin Wilson.

Since heading back to the Windy City, if you recall, Avila played a season with the Chicago White Sox, he has only had six at bats. On Saturday, he not only collected his first hit as a Cub but his first home run.

Watch as one of the newest Cub does a little bit of yard work against the Washington Nationals.
