WATCH: Jonathan Bernier robs former Red Wing Gus Nyquist

The Detroit Red Wings traded forward Gus Nyquist to the San Jose Sharks at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline in exchange for a second-round draft pick and a conditional third-round draft pick.

While Nyquist and his former teammates undoubtably remain friends off the ice, on it there’s still business to attend to! Monday night was his first time playing against the Red Wings with his new team, in which his former teammates got the better of his new ones. Detroit walked out of SAP Center at San Jose 3-2 winners over the Sharks thanks to goals from Andreas Athanasiou, Dylan Larkin, and Christoffer Ehn.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves, including a beauty on Nyquist early in the second period to preserve Detroit’s lead.

The save had Nyquist muttering to himself in frustration afterwards!

Did Pierre McGuire just spill the beans on Steve Yzerman?

NBC hockey analyst Pierre McGuire is known for a lot of things, but hockey knowledge is definitely at the forefront!

During an interview on TSN1200 with John Rodenburg and Shawn Simpson, McGuire was asked about the hypothetical situation of the Red Wings being able to draft center Jack Hughes, who is projected to be the top overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft. Check out how he responded:

Transcript beginning at 16:50:

Simpson: Would that (if Detroit got Hughes) end up being the face of a new rebuild, and almost a Steve Yzerman 2.0 for Detroit?

McGuire: Probably – it would probably make things a lot easier for once Stevie goes into Detroit, there’s no question.

Fingers crossed!

DSN’s exclusive interview with Kirk Maltby

The Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup winning teams of 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 were known for embodying the working class spirit of the Motor City. Perhaps no other lime combination that donned the Winged Wheel exemplified the blue collar attitude of Detroit than the group known as “The Grind Line”.

Originally modeled after the infamous “Crash Line” of the New Jersey Devils, legendary head coach Scotty Bowman put together center Kris Draper with wingers Kirk Maltby and Joey Kocur/Darren McCarty. Known for “grinding” and wearing down opponents, they were instrumental in bringing four Stanley Cup championships to Detroit.

Maltby began his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers after playing with the Owen Sound Platers of the OHL, with whom he enjoyed a 50 goal season (1991-92). He spent three years with the Oilers before being traded to the Red Wings in 1997 for defenseman Dan McGillis, where he’d spend the next 14 years of his career. He even landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated during the 1997 Stanley Cup run!
