The Detroit Red Wings started off the 2018 preseason schedule on the right note, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena in overtime by a final score of 3-2.
Michael Rasmussen potted the game-winning goal in overtime, beating Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry at 1:32 of the extra session while on the power play. He took a nifty pass at the side of the goal from Dylan Larkin and had an easy tap in to send the home fans home happy.

Detroit’s goal scorers in regulation were Trevor Hamilton and Jussi Jokinen in the second and third periods, respectively. Hamilton is a Grosse Point Farms native who signed with the Grand Rapids Griffins earlier this year. Meanwhile, Jokinen is a 13-year NHL veteran who is on a professional tryout with Detroit. He split last season between Edmonton, Los Angeles and Columbus. He’s also played for Pittsburgh, the Dallas Stars, and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Penguins didn’t dress any of their main stars, including Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Jarry stood tall in net, stopping 38 of the 41 shots that he faced on the night.
Jimmy Howard stopped 14 of the 15 shots that he faced during his time in net. Halfway through the game, Detroit switched goaltenders to give newcomer Harri Sateri some minutes in net.
The Red Wings host the Blackhawks tonight in their second game of the pre-season schedule tonight at 7:30 EST.
