It was 25 years ago this past February that Michigan’s Fab Five — consisting of Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson — started together for the first time. In their first game as a starting five, the Fab Five scored all of Michigan’s points as the No. 15 Wolverines defeated Notre Dame 74-65.

This quintet took the college basketball world by storm for multiple seasons in the early 1990’s. ESPN eventually created a 30 for 30 film, detailing the group’s constant adversity and negative portrayal from outsiders. The special by ESPN, at the time of its initial release, was the highest-rated documentary ever created by the “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”

Unfortunately, the Fab Five era ended up with a couple black eyes down the road, both on and off the court. The timeout gaffe by Chris Webber in the 1993 National Championship Game against North Carolina will be remembered as one of the more iconic moments in college basketball history. Off the floor, a scandal involving players being paid for money laundering further tarnished the program’s past and immediate future. Michigan was subsequently punished with probation, vacated wins and titles.

Still, by and large, the Fab Five brought a level of excitement and play that was unmatched during their time. While they never could quite finish the job on the floor and some sketchy business off it added fuel to the fire, the overall talent of this freshman core deserves to be recognized.

Let’s take a look back at some of the best highlights the Fab Five gave us.
