On Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals stormed back to beat the Kansas City Chiefs to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1988 season (That game was played in January of 1989).
While surfing the web, I came across a question from John Whiticar that got me thinking pretty hard.
That question is, “Who will be the next team to end their Super Bowl drought?”
Here is a list (Via Wikipedia) that shows each team’s last appearance in either the Super Bowl or NFL Championship Game. As you can see, the Lions lead the way with 64 seasons without an appearance in either the Super Bowl or NFL Championship Game.
So, let’s consider the teams that have gone a quarter of a century without getting to the Super Bowl. That narrows us down to the following teams.
-Detroit Lions
-New York Jets
-Cleveland Browns
-Minnesota Vikings
-Miami Dolphins
-Washington Football Team
-Buffalo Bills
-Jacksonville Jaguars
-Los Angeles Chargers
-Dallas Cowboys
Of the teams listed above, only the Bills and Cowboys made the Playoffs in 2022, so they have to be the best bets to get to the Super Bowl first, right?
Well, the Bengals proved this year that you don’t have to play in the playoffs in the previous season to get to a Super Bowl. Heck, they finished in last place during the 2020 regular season.
That being said, my pick is easy and it is the Buffalo Bills.
Josh Allen was literally 13 seconds away from leading the Bills to the AFC Championship Game this year and had it not been for an outdated NFL overtime rule that was likely created by a 5-year-old, they could have beaten the Bengals and advanced to the Super Bowl this season.
Nation, which of the teams listed above will be the next to end their Super Bowl drought?
