Howe’s legacy is permanently stamped on the game of hockey. His name will forever be attached to the Detroit Red Wings and his iconic number nine jersey. It’s just one of those jerseys that you instantly know who it is as soon as you see it.
The Blades’ schedule plan for ‘Thank You, Mr. Hockey Day’ will be as followed.
- 9:30am – Spread both Colleen and Gordie’s ashes at the Sasktel Centre near his statue outside of the arena.
- 12:00pm – Tailgate party open to the general public at the Sasktel Centre
- 1:00pm – Doors to the Sasktel Centre open. Artwork and some of the awards that Howe won throughout his NHL career (Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, etc) will be on hand for all to see. The first 6,000 fans will receive a collectible item.
- 2:00pm – Special pre-game ceremony will be held
- 2:25pm – Puck drop
As seen above, the Blades will be wearing special tribute jerseys in honor of ‘Mr. Hockey’.
Hats off the the Saskatoon Blades for paying tribute to a hockey icon. Gordie grew up in Floral, Saskatchewan, a providence that surrounds the city of Saskatoon. I can almost guarantee that he’s smiling from ear to ear from up above knowing that a hockey team, in his homeland is dedicating a full day in remembrance of him.
Gordie deserves each and every bit of it.
