Wings ink Nyquist

The Detroit Red Wings have signed 2008 draft pick Gustav Nyquist to an entry level contract.

Nyquist was a finalist for the Hobey Baker trophy awarded to the top collegiate player each of the last two seasons while playing for the Maine Black Bears of Hockey East (Jimmy Howard’s alma matter).

Scouts have said Nyquist has a ‘pro-ready’ game, and will likely join the Grand Rapids Griffins in the near future as they push for a playoff spot in the AHL’s North division.

*Update* From the Griffins website, Nyquist will join the Griffins in Texas tonight for their game against the Stars.

With the Wings already over-stocked on forwards for next year, Nyquist will likely spend the full season with Grand Rapids in 2011-2012 and challenge for a roster spot with the Wings in 2012-2013.

*Updated #2* Nyquist’s cap will have a cap hit of $762,500 each year of his two year deal signed yesterday. At the AHL level, he will make $65,000.
