Writer says that if Matthew Stafford were a black QB he would be out of a job

According to Rob Parker, who is a Detroit based columnist who also writes for Deadspin, Matthew Stafford would be out of a job if he was black.

Here is some of what Parker had to say in his article:

A Black quarterback with the same stats as Matt Stafford through his first five years would be considered a bum, a bust. That QB would probably be out of a starting gig and be a seldom-used backup making little money.

Oh, wait a minute. That Black QB is Jameis Winston.

On the other hand, Stafford was allowed to keep his job, earning millions and millions of dollars while not winning one playoff game or division title for the Lions in his 12 seasons in Detroit.

Now, Stafford — who was shipped to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff — is viewed as a savior in La-La Land.

Stafford is officially the Teflon QB. Just listen to the gushing commentary from NFL analysts about how great he is. Often, it sounds like they are talking about Aaron Rodgers.

There have been more excuses made for why Stafford failed in Detroit than all the untimely interceptions he has thrown in his career.

In Tampa, Winston was simply discarded, tossed out with the trash.

But an honest look at both quarterbacks will tell you they were basically the same player through their first five seasons in the league.

Parker went on to say that a black QB would not be able to stick around for 12 seasons if they were not able to win a playoff game.

Let’s be frank — there is no way a Black quarterback would have been able to stick around 12 seasons in the NFL on the same team and not be held accountable for never winning a playoff game. With Stafford under center, the Lions went 0-3 in the postseason.

Despite being the league’s No. 1 overall draft pick in 2009, Stafford didn’t elevate his teammates, didn’t make them better. In fact, lesser quarterbacks have been able to get their team victories they had no business getting.

Do you agree with Rob Parker?

  1. That might be the worst writing I have read. My eyes and brain still hurt from reading it. The difference in ones skin color has nothing to do with anything. Arm talent is all you need to compare and if you seriously think Jameis is in the same caliber than you are blind. Please stop and think about what you write before wasting the ten seconds it took to complete. How many players in the NFL have been given 2nd and 3rd chances? Whether from domestic violence, drug offenses, etc. that only have jobs because of their talent? If you have talent, no one cares what your skin color is. Talent is talent.. spare us the poor writing.

    • Rob was right on point.
I have said for years about Manning and Stafford that no black QB could throw 28 INTs in one year playing for a dome team and keep his job and Manning had 66 INTs after 3 years.
Name a black QB who kept his job 12 years and never once won his division, never won a playoff game and had a career losing record.
      I will wait.

  2. This is another example of the biased writing that continues to fuel the anger and frustration in this country. It’s too bad that we forget how much money this career in professional football as allowed people who otherwise would be on food stamps to become millionaires while dominating this career field in shear numbers employed. I have not yet seen any writing or reporting complaining about there not being enough white players on any of the professional football teams. Why not? But, I do read plenty of articles about how unfairly black players and coaches are treated, not given equal opportunity, not given certain job/positions within each team and/or football organization. What prompts this kind of misread of what exists? Are we deaf, blind, and unable to read what is going on? Maybe we can’t see the inequality on TV either when the teams show up!!!!

Let’s not forget that Stafford is just not “another” quarterback in professional football >< he is currently the 4th most proficient passer in football history, and done with a very mediocre franchise; is on of the most durable quarterbacks to play the game; and has a completion percentage that is within the top 10% of long term passers, again on a team that has a history of not taking good care of its leader. Doesn't that mean something when you want someone you can trust to give you their best every week?

  4. I’m a Rams fan and I think that the Lions pulled off one of the best trades lately. You couldn’t get them to throw in a free lunch also or maybe Kupp so Goff would have his favorite receiver. I know that are all saying that you should pick a quarterback with your pick at 7 but I think Kyle Pitts TE . I really wasn’t a Goff fan at first I thought the Rams had made a mistake. I’m someone who believes one play doesn’t lose a game and one player doesn’t win or lose it either. When he played with the broken thumb on his throwing hand never coming out of the game. He showed how much the game and his team means to him. I you just play him for a year like they say someone like Belichick could pick him up for next to nothing and ride him to the top again.

  5. Most definitely I like Jameis Winston he had the right players in Tampa but sometimes it comes down to the play calling and that’s mostly coaches in today’s game. After Jameis was let go I always thought he would make a good backup to Goff but if Goff had a problem then they would always have a controversy. Because given a real chance in the right place Jameis can light it up with the best of them. And you are oh so right we have seen it time and time again if a player like Stafford were black he would be a backup if lucky or stocking shelves at Walmart.

  6. No this guy is retarted. He played for the lions. The lions kept Barry sander and Calvin Johnson for there entire careers and they were black. The fact the lions haven’t won a playoff game is leadership. When we finally built a winning team with Caldwell the lions fucking fired him and brought in the biggest disappointment coach the ruined the lions

  7. It is a Detroit lions thing. And not a racist thing. Only the detroit lions would keep a losing qb that long

  8. Thank the Lord this writer isn’t making decisions for the Lions. If you can’t recognize the difference between Stafford and Winston other than the amount of melatonin in their skin, you must be blind and obviously stupid. Stafford’s ability to make incredibly accurate and incredibly hard passes way down the field into tight windows is a talent that honestly might surpass any other QB, ever. You’ll need to put the right schemes into place and a supporting cast, which the Lions have failed mightily at so far, but Stafford is a generational talent. I’m not saying Winston isn’t either, but there’s certainly no need for race to play a part. Thems the ups and downs of life. The chances we get. What we do with them. Stafford has been allowed to blossom because he’s obviously special. To make the type of claim you made right now at this time in the NFL, when so many teams would be bartering with Winston if his talent level was there, is doubly ridiculous. In fact your article is politically driven and void of any athletic insight.
