WP: Sabathia (1-1) LP: Verlander (1-1)
DETROIT, Michigan —
The New York Yankees avoided the sweep, and Justin Verlander suffered his 1st loss of the season after a 7-0 Yankee win on Sunday at Comerica Park.
After scoring 8 runs in back to back games on Friday and Saturday, the Detroit offense was silenced by Yankees ace CC Sabathia. The Tigers were only able to notch 4 hits off the New York left hander. Torii Hunter and Matt Tuiasosopo had 2 hits each, but for the most part the Tiger bats couldn’t muster up anything.
Justin Verlander went 7.1 innings, the longest start by a Tigers pitcher this year. Verlander allowed 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out 4. The bullpen was roughed up in the 8th and 9th innings, when Phil Coke and Octavio Dotel each gave up a pair of runs, putting the game out of reach.
The Tigers will be off tomorrow, before the Toronto Blue Jays come to town on Tuesday to start a 3-game mid week series at Comerica Park.

No matter how well you pitch, you can’t win when your team doesn’t score.
