Earlier this month, the Detroit Red Wings announced that an auction would be held to win memorabilia from Joe Louis Arena, which served as home of the Red Wings from 1979 to 2017.

Among the items for bid was the legendary “Al the Octopus”, which sold for an astounding $7,700! The famed Red Wings mascot was sold in the first round of bids that closed at 10 a.m. According to Schneider Industries Inc. COO Dan Rosenthal, nobody will know who the bidder is to “prevent any shenanigans” and make sure that everyone is a legitimate bidder.

In addition to Al the Octopus, some of the items for sale were the “Greatness is a Daily Choice” sign that hung in the Red Wings dressing room, used player lockers, locker room doors, arena signage, and more.

Olympia Entertainment and Red Wings employees are expected to have fully vacated Joe Louis Arena by the end of the month and moved into Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings knew they had to break through with points in the standings sooner or later because of the way they’ve been playing, or, “the process” as head coach Jeff Blashill called it. What does he mean by it?

It’s managing the puck. It’s getting on people with great pressure. It’s being fast coming up the ice and using our speed and putting other teams on their heels and doing it right shift by shift,” Blashill explained. “Every shift we got to outwork, outcompete, out-detail our opponent.”

“I’ve always been somebody that felt strongly that you don’t let the emotion of wins and losses cloud your vision of how you played,” he continued. “That goes with wins as much with losses.”

“Outside of five periods against Montreal, we’ve played like this. We don’t have the results to show for it.”
