Zach Zenner: ‘I’m absolutely back, 100 percent’

Since suffering a serious chest injury during Week 6 against the Chicago Bears last season, Zach Zenner has been on the road to recovery to get himself into good enough shape so he could once again step foot on the football field.

Zenner suffered a partially collapsed lung and fractured four ribs in five different places on a Pernell McPhee hit. He would end up staying overnight in a local Detroit hospital. Yeah, that just doesn’t sound fun at all. As you could expect, it was quite painful for the Lions’ running back.

“For a long time, it hurt just to sneeze,” Zenner said.

Even though he wasn’t necessarily healthy enough to be on the football field, that didn’t stop him from making sure he was attending meetings and practices once he was healthy enough to get around.

“It helped to be in film sessions and see people correcting mistakes and things like that.”

Jim Bob Cooter took over the offense after Week 7 last season after the team would fire Joe Lombardi. Being able to at least be involved with watching film and things like that really helped Zenner transition to this upcoming season.

After getting married and honeymooning with his wife in Mexico, Zenner started getting right back to work in an effort to be fully prepared for when camp got underway.

“I thought it was really important to come back sharp, and I’m starting to feel a lot better.”

He will compete with the likes of George Winn and Stevan Ridley for the third spot at running back on the depth chart as it seems like Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick have the number one & two spots locked up.
