The Detroit Red Wings will not be participating in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, so their 2016-17 season finale on April 9 against the New Jersey Devils will be their final game at historic Joe Louis Arena.
But before the old building closes, there will be one last bit of history to take place. Barring an injury, captain Henrik Zetterberg will play his 1,000th career game that day.
Zetterberg has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dreary season for the Red Wings. Through 76 games, he has 63 points on the season (16 G, 47 A) and is plus-13. He is the Red Wings nominee for the Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey.
Joe Louis Arena has been home to the Red Wings since 1979, and has provided countless memories by some of the greatest players to have played the game on its ice. Though it will be disappointing that the Joe won’t get to host any more playoff games before closing, Red Wings fans can be proud that one last milestone will be achieved by a franchise cornerstone in the famed old barn.
