After a season that fell short of expectations for Jim Harbaugh and the University of Michigan Wolverines, there was one thing that Harbaugh believe needed to happen: for the team to get stronger.

The Wolverines will be doing that in style beginning with this upcoming season with the completion of their new weight lifting facility. Although the aesthetics and look of a weight room can’t compare to the work that actually goes on inside, it certainly couldn’t hurt on the recruiting trail.

The 32,000 square foot facility at the converted Bennie Oosterbaan Field House is a massive upgrade over the 12,000 square feet facility the team had while at the Al Glick Field House. The facilities overall aren’t terribly fancy when compared to some others around the country, but the basketball court is certainly a nice touch. Facilities don’t necessarily equate to wins on the football field, but the typical adage is that success begins in the weight room. Having a facility that players enjoy being in could go a long way in providing the competitive edge that leads to victories.

The new weight room is not the only improvement Michigan hopes to make to their strength and conditioning this offseason. Harbaugh recently hired a new strength and conditioning coach from the SEC, bringing aboard Ben Herbert who served as the strength and conditioning coach for Arkansas the past five seasons. Herbert is also a certified member of the National Strength Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. Not a bad resume to bring to Michigan.

Herbert will have a nice new workspace as he works to fulfill Harbaugh’s goal of a stronger team headed into 2018.
