5 Detroit Lions likely to start 2022 season on PUP list

Don’t look now but we are just eight days away from the deadline for the Detroit Lions to announce their 53-man roster to start the 2022 season.

At that time, or even sometime before that, the Lions will also reveal which players will begin the season on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.

Here are the five players who seem likely to be headed to the PUP list to start the 2022 season.

FB Jason Cabinda

Last Monday, Dan Campbell gave an update on Jason Cabinda and it did not sound promising that he will be ready to roll by Week 1.

“That’s tough to say,” Campbell said of how long Cabinda might remain out. “That’s tough to say right now. It’s certainly going a little longer than we anticipated, but it’s hard to say. I think it’s highly unlikely that we see him at Pittsburgh. So what is that window? That’s the best way to say it.”

WR Jameson Williams

No surprise here whatsoever. Brad Holmes has already said Jameson Williams will be out in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles but the safe bet is that he is out for much longer than that as the Lions continue to be extra cautious with him.

“We’re going to be very smart with him,” Holmes said. “He’s in a good place right now. It’s not going to be Week 1.”

“[Coach] Dan [Campbell] and I felt we were in a position to acquire a player like this and don’t need him for Day 1,” Holmes said. “It’s a long-term thing.”

EDGE Romeo Okwara

Romeo Okwara is also a lock to remain on the PUP list to start the 2022 season. A few weeks ago, he spoke to reporters and he said he hopes to play at some point in 2022.

“It’s definitely one of the hardest years I’ve ever had to deal with,” Okwara said in early August. “This is my first major injury playing the sport. It’s definitely been a mental challenge, and physically, of course.

“I miss being out here with the guys, it’s definitely been really tough being on the sidelines watching. Definitely makes me want to be out there even more.”

“I’m very confident,” Okwara said. “Guys go through this surgery all the time, especially in recent years. I’m very, very optimistic with my recovery.”

EDGE Josh Paschal

Back on August 5th, Dan Campbell told reporters that Josh Paschal was “ahead of schedule” when it came to recovering from his hernia surgery. That being said, Campbell would not give any specifics about when the rookie would return to action. At this point, it seems likely he remains on the PUP list to start the season.

CB Jerry Jacobs

Jerry Jacobs’ promising rookie campaign came to an abrupt end when he tore his ACL early in Week 14’s game against the Denver Broncos. Jacobs has made it clear that he is going to be just fine but look for him to remain on the PUP list out of training camp.
