Prior to the start of their series finale with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers placed pitcher Artie Lewicki on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 14.
The Tigers today have placed RHP Artie Lewicki on the 10-day DL (retroactive to 8/14) with right elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, RHP Zac Reininger has been recalled from Triple A Toledo.

Lewicki was formally added to the rotation last week after the Tigers signed reliever Zach McAllister and, subsequently, DFA’d Jacob Turner (who has since then cleared waivers and returned to Triple-A Toledo). Lewicki started the opener of this series with Chicago on Monday, allowing three earned runs on six hits over 4.2 innings of work.
Overall, the 26-year-old Lewicki has compiled a 4.89 ERA in 13 games this season with the Tigers, three of those appearances coming in a starting role.
As far as possible replacements for Lewicki in the rotation, unless they resort to a “bullpen day” of sorts, one viable candidate on the current 40-man roster who could be recalled is Ryan Carpenter. The 27-year-old appeared in four games earlier this year for the Tigers, three of which were starts. He missed significant time earlier this season due to an oblique injury. In 13 starts with the Mud Hens, Carpenter has logged a 5.30 ERA.
Replacing Lewicki on the 25-man roster for the Tigers will be reliever Zac Reininger from Triple-A. This will be the third stint with the major league club for Reininger. He has appeared in seven games this season for Detroit, allowing eight runs over his seven innings of work. Since making his major league debut last season, Reininger in 17 career appearances has yielded 16 runs in 16.2 IP.
Down at Triple-A this season, Reininger was doing some solid work. He registered a 3.47 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 33 games, 16 of which he finished, including five saves recorded. He also was averaging a little more than a strikeout per inning.
